01. Route Analysis: Pierrot vs. Harlequin
The core conflict in The Freak Circus revolves around two opposing forces: the melancholic obsession of Pierrot and the chaotic sadism of Harlequin. Choosing a route isn't just about picking a tent in Day 1; it requires a consistent behavioral pattern throughout the game.
The Pierrot Strategy
To survive Pierrot's route, you must prioritize High Sanity and Empathy. Pierrot values emotional connection but is easily triggered by fear.
Key Tactic: Accept his gifts (The Ticket, The Cake) and choose options that validate his sadness. Do not look at Harlequin's reflection in the Mirror Maze, as this deducts massive Affection points (-5) and locks you out of the "Tearless Face" True Ending.
The Harlequin Strategy
Harlequin's route is mechanically harder. He detests boredom. To unlock his "Partners in Chaos" ending, you must keep your Sanity low enough to be interesting, but not so low that you panic.
Key Tactic: You must achieve a Perfect Score in the Knife Throwing minigame. Unlike Pierrot, Harlequin responds positively to boldness and sarcasm. Never beg for mercyโit guarantees a Bad End.
